In room 109 we strive for positive behavior by:
Giving out caught being goods anytime I spot a child making good choices. Our caught being goods are collected throughout the day. At the end of the day, a student is picked from the box and they get to bring home a stuffed animal and a book that we read that day.
Students can also earn Milton Coins by making good choices outside the classroom. These are given by administration, other teachers and bus drivers. The students put their name on the back of the paper coin and place it into our treasure chest. On Friday we pick one name out of the chest and that student receives a prize from administration.
We also work on whole class behavior by hanging a monkey on our tree anytime all the students in our classroom make good choices. This can be in our classroom if we have a visitor or outside of the classroom. This year the students earned their 20 monkeys in record time - WOW! Once they earn 20 monkeys they get to vote on a type of party (ie popcorn, pizza, ice cream, etc.) WHAT A TREAT!
I always strive to focus on the positive and get a student to make good choices by rewarding someone, but if a child continues to make a choice that is not in his/her best interest or in the class' best interest, they move their card.
1st warning - they move it to yellow 2nd warning - they move it to red 3rd warning - they move their card to orange which represents a time out.
Every child begins a new day on green. If they receive two yellows, a red or an orange in a week, they cannot go into treasure chest on Friday.
As the year progresses - I usually (If I can) become more lenient with this reward system. My hopes are that each child will want to make good choices to satisfy themselves.
